Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is the treatment of patients with physical and/or functional limitations that alter their normal daily activities by utilizing therapeutic exercise, activity training and various modalities. Some pathologies more commonly treated by physical therapy are:

    Speech Therapy

    Drew Memorial offers full time speech therapy services to inpatients, outpatients, or individuals receiving home health care. The Speech Therapy Department assesses, diagnoses and treats children and adults who have difficulties in the following areas:

    • Language Difficulty with the pronunciation of sounds.
    • Speech Difficulty with the pronunciation of sounds.
    • Voice The quality of the voice is affected by overuse, surgery, tension, and disease.
    • Stuttering Patients who stutter (or stammer) present with an interruption to the flow of their speech by repetition of sounds, words or complete blocks in speech.
    • Hearing Loss of any degree can interfere with communication in children and adults.
    • Swallowing Assistance and treatment are also provided to help children and adults who have difficulty in chewing or swallowing.
    • Management of the disorders above take form of direct treatment techniques, behavioral modification procedures and play therapy. Computers are incorporated into assessment and treatment procedures where appropriate.

    Occupational Therapy

    Occupational therapy is a major health service provided to help people whose lives are affected by birth injury, illness, social or emotional problems, or the process of aging.

    The chief aims of occupational therapy are to:

    Maximize independence
    Promote and maintain health
    Prevent injury or disability
    Occupational therapy is often necessary for persons who have had a stroke, psychiatric disturbance, arthritis, behavior problems, back injury, mental retardation, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, and other conditions. Occupational therapy may be used to manage pain, cope with disability and regain performance skills lost.
