Did You Know?
about the Drew Memorial Hospital Auxiliary?
The Drew Memorial Hospital Auxiliary was established in 1973. With construction of a new hospital building underway, the time was right for the formation of an auxiliary to assist in performing some routine hospital duties, so that the regular staff would have more time for patient needs. On July 18, 1973, Mrs. Joan Sadler called a meeting of interested people in the community room of the Commercial Bank and Trust Company. Feasibility, organizations, needs and possible charters were discussed. On August 7, 1973, another meeting was held and the group approved formal organization with the intent of joining state and national groups as rapidly as possible. Officers were elected, a charter committee was appointed, and the regular meeting date was set for the first Tuesday of each month. At the September meeting the charter was read and in October it was approved. The “Auxiliary” was officially on its way.
Since that time, the Auxiliary members have dedicated their time and efforts to Drew Memorial Hospital to bring comfort and hope to all patients and guests. Dedicating their time and energy to help out wherever needed within the hospital. They also raise money on a continuous basis to create a “better” healthcare facility for our community. Their generosity reaches throughout every department wherever there is a need. With fundraisers such as garage sales, omelet breakfasts, silent auctions, Christmas tree lighting ceremonies to honor or memorialize a loved one and many more; the Auxiliary has been able to purchase needed equipment for offices, dietary, environmental services, and surgery. This was accomplished only through hard work and determination.
So if you are interested in joining one of the most active volunteer organizations with a heart full of care and gentleness, the Hospital Auxiliary has a place for you. They work in the gift shop, lab, cafeteria, emergency room, accounting as well as distributing juice and magazines to patients. I could never name all the areas where the Drew Memorial Hospital Auxiliary serves our community through the hospital but they are there. They bring us comfort and make us smile because we know that without them healthcare would not have the personal touch it deserves.
